A delicious blooming onion recipe featuring a medium onion coated with a seasoned flour and breadcrumb mixture, deep-fried until golden brown and crispy. This dish is perfect for snacking and can be served with your favorite dipping sauce.
Cut the top off the onion and peel it. Place the onion cut-side down.
Make four evenly spaced cuts around the onion, slicing 1/2 inch from the root.
Continue slicing between each section until you have 16 evenly spaced cuts.
Soak the onion in cold water for about 30 minutes.
In a bowl, mix together the flour, bread crumbs, chili powder, pepper powder, and salt.
In another bowl, add enough water to the dry mixture to make a slightly thick batter.
Remove the onion from the water and pat it dry. Dip it into the dry mixture, ensuring to get in between the petals.
Then dip it into the wet mixture, ensuring it’s well-coated.
Dip it back into the dry mixture for a second coating.
Heat oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to 350°F (175°C).
Carefully place the onion in the oil, cut-side down, and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Remove the onion from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
